How we worship …
At St. Luke’s we understand ourselves to be celebrants of the liturgy (worship), rather than bystanders or consumers of worship. We get into the act—into the rich drama—of the liturgy through our responses to prayers and readings, our singing, and our participation in the peace of Christ and in our sacred meal. Many voices, many hands, many gifts are required to celebrate the Holy Eucharist and each of us brings the gifts we have to the table where we become one body. We seek to be alive in God and to sing God’s praises.
Our liturgy knows no outsiders. All who seek God are welcome to the feast of God’s love. We strive to continue that radical hospitality of Christ in all aspects of our parish life.
We use the Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church as well as Enriching Our Worship, using language and images spanning a wide variety of religious experience. We sing from the Church’s 1982 Hymnal, the African-American Hymnal Lift Every Voice and Sing, the modern Episcopal companion hymnal Wonder, Love, and Praise, and a book of hymns and songs of women composers called Voices Found . But we do not limit ourselves to these sources.
Music / Choir:
Music is a crucial part of our worship life at St. Luke’s. We sing a wide repertoir of music spanning centuries and music of various lands. Our choir leads us by providing support to our voices as well as performing anthems and special vocal and instrumental music. We do not strive to be professional, but to do our best. We invite you to lend your voice in praise at St. Luke’s, and if it is your passion, to join the always-open community of singers in the choir.
Lakeshore Retirement Community Service:
Many members of St. Luke’s live at The Lakeshore, a retirement community on the shore of Lake Washington. Lay leaders of worship lead a service of prayer, sacred scripture and song among the people of The Lakeshore in the activity room.
All are welcome!
